Root canal therapy is generally performed because something has caused the death of the tooth nerve (cavities, trauma, etc.). A root canal is performed by accessing the nerve space within the tooth and then cleaning out any remaining nerve tissues and/or bacteria from inside the root canal system. This is done using a system of files and disinfectants that help to ensure proper cleaning of the tooth, which is then sealed with a special rubber-like material called gutta-percha. After the root canal spaces have been filled, the tooth is then restored to optimum form and function with traditional filling materials or a crown.
